Beautifully renovated house in a charming setting within walking distance of the centre of Scicli. The views from the roof terrace are wonderful – limestone cliffs with old cave houses. Francesca, the owner, could not have been more helpful – she picked us up at the station on arrival, helped arrange car rental & was our ‚tourist information centre‘. Scicli is fascinating & makes a good base for exploring the other Baroque towns in this part of Sicily. Nearby Sampieri has a great beach, with the added advantage that it is backed by an area of pine forest (giving much needed shade) complete with picnic benches

Amidst other small houses in an almost forgotten part of the town of Scicli you shall find C’era una volta. This is a house with much atmosphere and sentiment, tastefully renovated, ideal for lovers and smaller families. From the roofterrace you have a wonderful look of the old town with historic caves as well as the nearby small mountains. The town itself is ideal for walks in narrow streets, cosy squares with baroque houses and fine churches, quiet places where the old men gather. Do not waste your time going to Portopalo, but concentrate on the fine beaches to the south of Scicli or the interesting towns of Ragusa, Modica and Noto to the north. Within a day’s ride you may reach Syracusa or even Etna. So Scicli is a wellsituated starting point for your exploring of the eastern part of Sicily. You could not find more charming hosts than the owners of Cera una volta, Francesca and Luigi. Speaking a perfect English language, being cultured and knowledgeable, they were the most engaging and lovely people.
